About 2 years ago, Dr. Marc Pollack was retired from a long and successful career as an Emergency Room physician, but he knew that he wanted to volunteer in his community and continue to “do something of significance.” He decided to volunteer at the Clearwater Free Clinic, and the patients here at the Clinic are very grateful every week.
Dr. Pollack says that he truly enjoys the work here at the Clinic. “I get to use my knowledge and clinical experience. The patients are very nice and appreciative, and the staff is great. And there are no electronic records and no forms to complete!”
Dr. Pollack’s rewards are great. He has numerous stories about his work here, and he feels great satisfaction from the fact that many patients, sometimes for the very first time, feel like they have their very own doctor and feel that they are not rushed in and out but can actually talk to him about their medical issues.
When asked why people should support the Clearwater Free Clinic, Dr. Pollack affirms that it is an important resource for our community. “These patients are our neighbors who work in our community, and they are in need of health care.” When our staff nurse practitioner was called out for a few days recently, Dr. Pollack wanted to be sure that patients were seen, so he volunteered to come in for extra hours every day that she was gone.
And the Clinic patients are grateful for his care. One of his favorite memories is of the woman who felt so good and so grateful after her visit that she asked if she could hug him. “Of course!” he responded, with a grin.

And to live a healthy life? Dr. Pollack suggests that we all have a positive attitude and that we “eat moderately, exercise often, and be kind to people you encounter.” It is our pleasure to honor Dr. Pollack today as an example of volunteerism at its best!
