Meet 2025 Volunteer of the Year Nick Douridas

From Volunteer to Future Physician: Nick’s Journey at the Clearwater Free Clinic

For many aspiring physicians, the path to medicine is shaped not only by textbooks and lectures, but by meaningful, real-world experiences. For Nicholas “Nick” Douridas, an incoming first-year student at the University of Central Florida College of Medicine, volunteering at the Clearwater Free Clinic has been a defining part of that journey.

Discovering a Passion for Service

Nick first learned about the clinic through his brother Sava, who began volunteering there while working at Mease Countryside Hospital. Hearing about his brother’s hands-on experiences—interacting with patients, scribing for physicians, and building meaningful connections—sparked Nick’s interest.

“I was more than excited to get started,” Nick recalls. “It sounded like a place where I could really make a difference.”

Gaining Experience Across the Clinic

Since joining in July 2023, Nick has immersed himself in nearly every aspect of the clinic’s operations, volunteering almost weekly. He began at the front desk, helping with scheduling, prescription refills, and patient callbacks—critical tasks that keep the clinic running smoothly.

Over time, he transitioned into a scribing role, working alongside family medicine physicians and specialists. This experience gave him a front-row seat to patient care, from initial visits to specialist referrals. More recently, he expanded his involvement to the medication room, rounding out his understanding of clinic workflow.

“I’ve been fortunate to see how everything connects,” he says. “From intake to treatment, it’s all about coordinated care.”

The Heart of the Experience: Patients

When asked what stands out most, Nick doesn’t hesitate: it’s the patients.

“The opportunity to talk with patients and learn more than just why they’re here—that’s been the most fulfilling part,” he explains.

The clinic serves underserved and working-class populations, many of whom face significant barriers to healthcare. For Nick, getting to know their stories—and understanding how the clinic can support them—has been deeply impactful

Moments That Leave a Lasting Impression

Some of Nick’s most memorable experiences come from patients who had gone years—sometimes decades—without seeing a physician.

“Many come in feeling like they’re at their breaking point,” he says. “They’ve been dealing with chronic conditions like diabetes or back pain without proper care.”

Seeing their relief and renewed hope when they finally receive medical attention is something Nick won’t forget.

“Just knowing that we’re here, that we’re accessible to them—it means everything,” he adds. “Being part of that process has been incredibly powerful.”

A Different Perspective on Medicine

Volunteering at the clinic has also given Nick a broader perspective on healthcare—one that extends beyond clinical knowledge.

“You see how hard life can be for some people,” he explains. “There are patients dealing with job loss, lack of transportation, or family challenges—and it all impacts their health.”

This exposure has reinforced his interest in pursuing internal medicine with a primary care focus, where he hopes to build long-term relationships with patients and address not just their medical needs, but the factors affecting their overall well-being.

Advice for Future Volunteers

For anyone considering volunteering, Nick offers a clear message: go for it.

“It’s a great opportunity to see medicine in a way that you don’t usually experience in traditional settings,” he says. “You gain insight into both the clinical and human sides of care.”

More importantly, he emphasizes the inspiration that comes from working with underserved communities.

“If you want to be reminded why you chose medicine—and to push yourself to do more for your patients—this is the place to be.”

Nick’s journey is a powerful reminder that medicine is as much about compassion and connection as it is about science. Through his work at the Clearwater Free Clinic, he’s already embodying the kind of physician he hopes to become.Bottom of Form
