They Listened When No One Else Would
Emma's Story of Healing, Recovery, and Hope
Several years ago, Emma found herself facing one of the most difficult periods of her life.
After leaving a job and navigating significant personal challenges, she began experiencing serious health problems that affected nearly every aspect of her daily life. As a young adult in her early twenties, she sought help from multiple healthcare providers and emergency rooms, hoping to find answers.
Instead, she often felt dismissed.
“I knew something was wrong,” Emma says. “But because I was young, it felt like people weren't taking my symptoms seriously.”
Her condition continued to worsen as she searched for explanations. What she didn't know at the time was that she was living with lupus, an autoimmune disease that can be difficult to diagnose and often presents with a wide range of symptoms.
Everything changed when she came to Clearwater Free Clinic.
For the first time, she felt heard.
Providers took the time to listen to her concerns, investigate her symptoms, and help her understand what was happening with her health. Through the support of Dawn, Dr. Lowenstein, and the care team, Emma finally received answers and began an appropriate treatment plan.
The impact was life-changing.
As her health improved, she was able to begin rebuilding the life that illness had interrupted. She regained her strength, returned to work, and started feeling hopeful about the future again.
“Literally everything changed,” she says. “I was able to get a job again. I was able to get back on my feet.”
But the Clinic's impact extended beyond her physical health.
During this time, Emma was also facing challenges related to recovery. Through behavioral health support and counseling services, she found encouragement, guidance, and a team of people who genuinely cared about her well-being.
“Coming here really helped me get through that,” she says.
Looking back, she believes the most meaningful part of her experience has been the compassion she received from everyone at the Clinic.
“What makes this place different is that they care about you as a person,” she explains. “They actually sit down, listen to what you're going through, and help you.”
That sense of connection and respect made a lasting impression.
“If you're looking for a place where people genuinely care about not only your health but also who you are as a person, this is it,” she says.
Today, Emma continues to receive care through Clearwater Free Clinic and remains grateful for the providers and staff who supported her during some of the most difficult moments of her life.
For Emma, Clearwater Free Clinic was more than a healthcare provider. It was a place where she found answers, support, and hope when she needed them most.
