A Place of Support and Renewal: His Clearwater Free Clinic Journey
Nathan’s* lived in Clearwater nearly his entire life. He remembers riding his bike past the old downtown Free Clinic building as a kid, always aware it existed but never imagining he would one day rely on it. Without insurance and working jobs that didn’t offer coverage, he simply went without care. “I hadn’t been to a doctor in 25, maybe 28 years,” he says. When his mental health began to decline and friends encouraged him to seek help, he finally decided it was time to walk through the Clinic’s doors.
He arrived carrying both physical discomfort and emotional strain. “I came in with neck pain,” he explains. The Clinic sent him for X‑rays, which revealed arthritis — a diagnosis that brought clarity and relief. “I’m 64, so arthritis makes sense,” he says. “But I needed to know it wasn’t something worse.” Years of working outdoors had also left him worried about his skin, but the Clinic evaluated and treated those concerns as well. “It was such a relief to know I wasn’t dealing with skin cancer,” he says.
The most profound change, though, came through mental health support. He began meeting with the Clinic’s behavioral health team, who helped him understand his symptoms, build healthier routines, and find the right treatment plan. “I was crying every day,” he says. “Now I’m 99% better. I want to live again.” With improved sleep, a healthier appetite, and renewed motivation, he’s exercising, gaining strength, and feeling hopeful for the first time in years.
What stands out most to him is the compassion he felt from the moment he walked in. “The facility, the people — it’s better than any medical care I’ve ever had,” he says. He expected judgment or stigma, but instead found warmth, professionalism, and dignity. “I never felt like a customer. I felt like a patient who mattered.”
He wants donors to understand the impact they make. “They should know they’re changing lives,” he says. “They changed mine.” And as his own life continues to stabilize, he hopes to give back someday too. “When things get better for me, I want to help others the way the Clinic helped me.”
