Getting to Know Our M+M Co-Chair: Jeannie Shapiro

Jeannie and her daughter Corey at M+M 2025.

For more than two decades, Jeannie Shapiro has been a driving force behind one of Clearwater’s most beloved events — Martinis & Matisse, benefitting the Clearwater Free Clinic. As this year’s event Co-Chair, Jeannie brings creativity, dedication, and a deep love for the Clinic’s mission to every detail of this signature fundraiser.

A Legacy of Service and Celebration

Jeannie began her journey with the Clearwater Free Clinic in April 1998, joining a small but passionate team dedicated to improving access to health care for lower-income residents. A few years later, she and a small committee of 8–10 volunteers began dreaming up a unique fundraising event — something fresh and different from the traditional seated dinners and silent auctions of the time.

Their vision came to life in January 2004 with the very first Martinis & Matisse, hosted at the Dunedin Fine Arts Center. That inaugural event featured 36 donated works of art, two restaurants, and Blue Martini from Tampa serving up the event’s signature cocktail. About 125 guests attended — and the rest, as Jeannie says, is history.

We wanted to create a community event that was vibrant, fun, and centered around art and connection. The artists were so supportive, donating pieces to help support the Clinic’s mission — and that spirit of generosity has continued to this day.

Behind the Scenes

For Jeannie, one of the best parts of planning Martinis & Matisse is working alongside a dedicated team of volunteers, talented artists, and generous restaurant partners. Each year brings fresh ideas and new energy, but also a continued sense of camaraderie and purpose.

One of her favorite memories?

“The 2021 Martinis — the invitation recreation tunnel was simply magical,” she says. “Guests walked through it as they arrived, and after such a challenging time coming out of COVID, it felt like a true celebration.”

When asked what people might not realize about planning an event of this scale, Jeannie laughs and says, “It takes an incredible amount of coordination and creativity — but our team stays organized and energized because we truly believe in what we’re doing.”

About the Event

This year, Jeannie is most excited to continue the tradition of fun and philanthropy that Martinis & Matisse has become known for. “It’s always wonderful to preview the art and connect with friends and the community,” she says.

And why does this event matter so much?

“Because it raises money to keep our community healthy and productive — and healthy citizens are the greatest asset any community can have.”

Personal Connection

Jeannie, Bruce Livingston (Former Board Member and Board Chair), and Sue long time staff member and super volunteer for Martinis + Matisse.

After 26 years with the Clearwater Free Clinic — including the first 1½ as a volunteer — Jeannie’s connection to the Clinic’s mission runs deep.

“I’m proud that the money raised through Martinis & Matisse directly supports patient care, medical supplies, and essential programs,” she explains. “It’s about ensuring that quality medical and mental health services are available to everyone who needs them.”

If she had to describe the event in three words?
Unique. Exciting. Community.

Why You Should Attend
